Although UCLA classmates Kedist and Dan felt instant attraction when they met at a school football game with a group of friends, she became truly hooked when Dan averted disaster by retrieving her lost handbag. Three years later, during a walk on a Malibu beach, he surprised Kedist with Champagne and roses. She screamed yes before he had time to present the ring.
A year-and-a-half-long search finally led the couple to Triunfo Creek Vineyards in Malibu, their dream venue. “Dan and I wanted a day that felt warm and intimate that reflected our tastes and laid-back California lifestyle,” says the bride. As an ode to their experience studying abroad in Paris, the couple had a French-countryside theme epitomized first by an idyllic outdoor ceremony under a giant oak tree, then a farmhouse-style dinner with clean tablescapes and lush greenery. They also infused personal touches throughout, recruiting Kedist’s grandmother as the officiant; close friend Doll Knight to sing their first dance song “La Vie En Rose”; and by serving Ethiopian food, a nod to Kedist’s heritage.
WHAT THEY LEARNED
“Outsource as much as you can to family and friends that you trust,” Kedist advises. “They want to help and be a part of your day.” The duo rallied many longtime friends to serve as vendors.
The couple organized a mini-moon in Tulum and a longer Ethiopian vacation, but plans held up when two months later, they received some happy news: They were pregnant with a baby girl. “She is perfect,” says Kedist.
